Alex stood next to the bleachers, leaning against a wood wall that had more paint chips missing than paint. The layers of the years showed through curled edges, following the times like a wilted rose shedding stiff acrylic leaves. She watched as Rohanna put Galileo through his paces. She was so intent on what she was doing that she didn’t notice Alex when she passed a few feet away.

Rohanna was impressive. She had a gentle but firm way with her mount, never pushing him but always getting the most out of him. They were a good team together. I wonder why Rohanna dreamed that he was misbehaving. Was it some secret fear or just nervousness on her part?

Alex stiffened and tipped her head slightly, catching the soft sound of footfalls on grass. She glanced back to confirm what she already knew. The woman Ro had been with earlier was coming up behind her.

“Well met, Shyann,” Alex called out over her shoulder. Shyann jumped at Alex’s unexpected greetings.

“How did you know?” Shyann asked as she approached the piece of wall Alex was holding up. Glancing over at Ro in the ring with Galileo, she looked back at Alex. “She really is amazing on him, isn’t she?” Shyann asked, mirroring Alex’s thoughts.

“Is there something I can help you with?” Alex said, choosing to ask her own question rather than answer Shyann’s.

“Well, I’m not quite sure. Maybe you could tell me what’s going on between you two. Rohanna was quite tight lipped about it.”

Alex laughed heartily. The woman was bold as hell. “I confess I’m confused. From the look of things earlier, you seemed to be working quite hard to beg Rohanna off me. In fact, I got the distinct impression that you had other ideas floating around in that devious little head of yours.”

“No. Why would you think that?” Shyann sputtered.

Alex smirked at her. She was so damned obvious it was hysterical. Still, she couldn’t help but tease the woman a bit before letting her off the hook.

“Perhaps it was the way you looked me up and down, or maybe it was how long you stared at this, hmmm? Alex asked, lowering her voice to a more intimate tone. She raised her left arm, displaying the wide leather bracer. Shyann swallowed nervously, stepping back from her and putting space between them.

“What are you?” she asked, almost whispering.

“Don’t you know? I have to admit, I am curious at Rohanna’s apparent lack of knowledge about her heritage. Here you are, reeking of Fae—all seduction and sexual tension, yet you are as ignorant of me as Rohanna is of herself. What gives?” Alex tried to rein in the aggression tramping through her heart. Neither of these women were what she was used to, humans with a drop or two of Fae blood to quicken her pulse and pique her interest. These two were altogether different, but it was Rohanna that had set her blood boiling despite her contrived and well-scripted indifference.

“That’s not my place to say, I am honor bound not to interfere.
